School holiday on Valentine's Day in Swaffham Prior
Swaffham Prior’s school logbooks record a morning holiday granted to pupils each St Valentine’s Day from 1914 to 1939. The children used to sing the song round the village and collect pennies for treats. The custom died out shortly after the First World War. One new head teacher who was probably not a local man failed to declare the half holiday and reported that many of the pupils stayed away from school on the morning. Another brought forward the half holiday to the 13th February because a School Inspection was planned for the 14th February.
